The questions every parent asks
Know how they're doing, not just guess
How is my child doing?
Each test is marked straight away, and the report shows marks for every skill across their recent tests.
Which skills are they missing?
Results are broken down by skill, so a gap in inference or summary shows up on its own.
How can I help?
Every answer comes with specific feedback and a model answer, so you can talk it through together.
Why we built this
Hi, I'm Doug. I built 11 Plus Panda for my own daughter.
Eighteen months before her CSSE exam, I was in the dark. Her school was doing some prep, we had a brilliant tutor, and there were a handful of online tools — but I still couldn't answer the questions every parent asks: How is she doing? What skills is she missing? How can I help?
I taught for five years before this, and I knew one thing: every exam has a code. A shortcut. A teaching method that significantly improves results. So I spent three months unpicking seven years of CSSE past papers — and a lot of coffee — until I'd worked out the code.
The six CSSE skills
What's tested, and how it's practised
Each skill has its own short tests in the CSSE format, and full mock papers mix them together. Answers are marked against a fixed mark scheme, with feedback on exactly what to fix.
Retrieval
Finding the exact fact the question asks for, and nothing else.
Vocabulary in Context
Explaining what a word means in this sentence, not just in a dictionary.
Inference
Working out what the writer suggests, backed up with evidence from the text.
Language & Effect
Picking out a word or phrase and explaining the effect it has on the reader.
Summary
Pulling the key points together, in order, in their own words.
Personal Response
Giving a clear opinion and supporting it with the passage.
What you'll see
A clear picture of your child's comprehension skills
After every test, you get a clear picture of where your child is strong and where to focus next.
Emma's comprehension skills
Based on completed tests. This gets clearer as Emma practises each week.
- Marks per skill
- Marks earned out of marks available, added up across the last three tests.
- A label for each skill
- Strong, On track, Building or Focus next — so you know where to spend time.
- The bar
- A quick visual of each score, coloured by band.
A suggested routine
Short tests. Taken often. With instant feedback.
The practice that works for the CSSE is simple to describe and easy to keep up.
Keep sessions short
Three or four short, sharp sessions a week work better than one long one.
Use the right format
Questions follow the CSSE paper, not a generic 11+ workbook.
Read the feedback
Look at the marking together straight after each test, while it's fresh.
Re-test the weak spots
Go back to skills marked Building or Focus next instead of repeating ones already secure.

Frequently asked
Questions parents ask us
What is the CSSE 11+ exam?
The CSSE 11+ is the entrance exam for the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex. It tests English (including comprehension), Maths and creative writing under tight time pressure, and is designed to identify the top ~5% of candidates.
What does the CSSE comprehension paper test?
Six comprehension skills: retrieval, vocabulary in context, inference, language and effect, summary and personal response — all under time pressure on demanding texts.
How long does it take to prepare a child for CSSE comprehension?
If your child is already a confident reader, around six months of structured practice — short, frequent sessions with immediate feedback — is enough to build the comprehension skills the CSSE requires.
How often should my child practise?
Three to four short, sharp sessions a week is the sweet spot. Consistency matters more than length: regular practice with immediate feedback moves the needle faster than occasional long sessions.
How is 11 Plus Panda different from other 11+ tools?
11 Plus Panda is built only for the CSSE comprehension paper — not a generic 11+ workbook. Every task is modelled on real past papers, marked instantly, and tracked against the six comprehension skills the CSSE tests.
Who built 11 Plus Panda?
11 Plus Panda was built by Doug, a former teacher of five years, alongside his friend Dan. Doug created the first version while preparing his own daughter for the CSSE 11+.
What age is 11 Plus Panda for?
11 Plus Panda is designed for children in Year 5 (ages 9–10) preparing to sit the CSSE 11+ in Year 6, though it's also useful for confident Year 4 readers starting early.
Do I need a tutor as well?
No — 11 Plus Panda works as a standalone comprehension programme. But it pairs well with a tutor: parents and tutors can use the weakness reports to focus sessions on exactly the skills that need work.
